For me the best year for the band was with Pig and Keith together.

Turn on the 1970-01-02 FE Lovelight, at 16:52 Pigpen tells Bobby "I'd shine on you if I be a dog!"

my favorite Pig tune is Alligator.

What the song means or is about, I never figured out.

Sleepy Alligator in the noon day sun,
Lyin' by the river just like he usually done.
Call for his whiskey, he can call for his tea,
Call all he want to, but he can't call for me.

Oh no! I've been there before,
And I ain't gonna come around here any more.
Creepy alligator coming all around the bend,
Shoutin' about the times when we was mutual friends,
I checked my memory and I checked it quick, yes I will.
I checked it runnin' some old kind of trick.

Oh no! Well I've been there before,
And I ain't gonna come around here any more.

Sailin' down the river in an old canoe,
A bunch of bugs and an old tennis shoe.
Out of the river all ugly and green,
Came the biggest old alligator that I've ever seen!

Teeth big and pointy and his eyes were buggin' out,
Contracted the union, put the beggars to rout.
Screamin' and yellin', he was pickin' his chops,
He never runs he just stumbles and hops.
Just out of prison on ten dollars bail,
Mumblin' bitches and waggin' his tail.

These lyrics, if memory serves me well, was the first thing Hunter sent to the band. Hmmmm. A little LSD and we have some wonderful nonsense from the bard. Kind of looking at a 'gator and seeing some human traits--or vice-versa.

thanks for that.
Did a quick check, and found out that while Hunter wrote most of the words,
Pigpen wrote the section about the canoe, biggest old alligator, contact the union, put the beggers to rout...

The band or mainly Weir wrote the dig at the other ballrooms (The Dead were running the Carousel at the time in competion with the Fillmore and Avalon):

hung up waitin' for a windy day
Hung up waitin for a windy day
Tear down the Fillmore,
Gas the Avalon
